MEET THE CREW: Adrian Maruri

Adrian Maruri , Sound Designer/Sound Mixer for ”Little t“

  1. How did you design the sound world to reflect the inner journey of the main character, the healing from trauma?

In a very real way trauma constrains us until we fully heal and understand how to be free from those constraints or at least learn to indentured and cope with it. My goal after discussing the story with Masha and getting a very clear idea and direction from her, was to similarly constrain the sound that she perceived at the beginning and end with the character perceiving a more beautiful reality sonically as she is able to heal from her trauma. So we start with something that feels real but odd, like something’s missing or is not normal and that starts shifting with the arc of the character.

  2. What's your favorite aspect of sound design?

My favorite aspect has got to be the extra tool and layer that sound adds to storytelling. It also allows to add beauty in a very subtle way even in the most mundane moments. I enjoy the big otherworldly and intricate sounds that you need to come up with especially for animation as much as I enjoy the rhythm of the footsteps of someone walking in a hallway in their home (I tried to think of the most boring scenario lol) Sound Design can make any moment special.

  3. What is the difference in working with actors in animation vs live action?

The main difference I’ve noticed between animation and live action performance from the actors, is that the acting needs to be more proactive. If you’re put in a live action environment, the art is to believe you’re in it and react to the scenario you’re in. Acting for animation, the environment is inspired by the performance and the actors can literally make and shape the movie as they go. If an actor decides to say the line a specific way during recording, animation has the ability to adapt and transform around their performance.

  4. What's your favorite dessert or comfort food?

This is probably the hardest question of the bunch, lol. It’s either a good and hot peach cobbler with ice cream on top. Maybe a cheesecake especially if it’s an Oreo one. For savory, a nice simple burger or a home made Pizza. And I’ll stop there to not go on forever.
